左右がやや高く起ち上がって半月の形をなす。左右の口角（こうかく）のあたりに至ると、後方の前唇と高低が揃う。子鯨は勢美（セミクジラ）と同じであるが、左右の唇が三角形をなすところが異なる。座頭（ザトウクジラ）と長須（ナガスクジラ）は、前と左右とが皆同じ高さで平らであり、左右の口角に至るにつれて、しだいに前よりも高くなる。上顎は髭（ひげ）のみで、下唇の当たる部分は、かすかに下唇の影（輪郭）をなしている。

　　附録：オランダの説によると、氷海（北極海）の鯨は、唇の先に上下ともに短毛があるという。この唇の形はおかしく（珍しく）、蛇人（コス）のS字〔の形〕……

The lower jaw (*shitaago*) has two bones, which originate from the left and right sides of the *tei* bone (a central jaw bone) and curve forward. Further details will be given under the entry for "Bones" later in the text.

The flesh at the joint between the upper jaw and the lower jaw is called *Dentsuru*.

In general, the whale's lower lip curves upward, covering the upper. In the case of the *Semi* (right whale), the front of the lip is low,

while the left and right sides rise somewhat, forming a half-moon shape. Toward the corners of the mouth on both sides, the front lip and the sides become level in height. The calf of the right whale resembles the adult in this respect, but differs in that the lips on the left and right form a triangular shape. The *Zatō* (humpback whale) and the *Nagasu* (fin whale / rorqual) have lips that are uniformly level across the front and sides, gradually rising higher than the front as one moves toward the corners of the mouth. The upper jaw consists only of baleen, and the area where the lower lip meets it forms a faint shadow outlining the lower lip.

　　Appendix: According to Dutch accounts, whales of the ice seas (Arctic Ocean) have short hairs on both the upper and lower edges of their lips. The shape of these lips is peculiar, resembling the letter "S"...
