問ふに鸚鵡は雷電暴雨頻りにして甚た困却せ
る由を荅へける冨商は是に扵て鸚鵡の語を信
ぜす吾婦の事を告げたるも亦彼が胡乱言（ ｜めつたぐち）に出
でたるならんと忽ち大ひに怒り罪なき鸚鵡を
篭より取出し力を極めて地板（ ｜ゆかいた）の上に擲ちけれ
ば愍れむべし即時に息は絶にけり其後冨商は
鸚鵡の寃罪なるを聞き知りて大に之を悔たり
現代語訳
鏡面に蝋燭の火を照らして鳥籠のあたりを閃かせることを、宵から暁まで続けさせた。そうして次の日、富商は家に帰り、また鸚鵡に「昨夜何事かあったか」と問うと、鸚鵡は「雷電と暴雨が頻繁で、甚だ困り果てました」という旨を答えた。富商はこれによって鸚鵡の言葉を信じず、「私の妻の事を告げたのも、また彼のでたらめな言葉から出たものであろう」と、たちまち大いに怒り、罪のない鸚鵡を籠より取り出し、力の限り床板の上に叩きつけたところ、哀れなことに即座に息が絶えてしまった。その後、富商は鸚鵡の冤罪であることを聞き知って、大いにこれを悔やんだ。
英語訳

Then the next day, the wealthy merchant returned home and again asked the parrot, "Did anything happen last night?" The parrot replied that there had been frequent thunder, lightning, and torrential rain, and that it had been extremely distressed. Based on this, the merchant no longer trusted the parrot's words, thinking "Its telling me about my wife must also have come from its nonsensical chatter." He immediately flew into a great rage and, taking the innocent parrot from its cage, hurled it with all his strength onto the floorboards. Pitiably, it died instantly. Afterward, the wealthy merchant learned that the parrot had been falsely accused and greatly regretted his actions.
