せじと自から盟ひを立たりけり斯くて或日常

たるを曳擧げ次には沙泥を盛りたる馬篭を曳

事があったのだろうか、網を投げることは一日に四回よりは多く
しないと自ら誓いを立てていた。こうしてある日、いつもの
ように早朝に家を出て、月を明かりにして船を波間に漕ぎ
出し、三回まで網を撒いたところ、撒くたびに手に
堪え難いほど強く引かれ、網が切れるほどに重かったので、数
千の魚を得たわけではないが、数尾の大魚は逃
すまいと心嬉しく、なんとかして引き上げたところ、最初の
網にはロバの死骸の大きなものが既に腐敗した
ものを引き上げ、次には砂泥を盛った馬籠を引き
上げ、またその次には貝殻や石、泥などをおびただしく引き上げた。

Had something happened? He had made a personal vow that he would cast his net no more than four times in a single day. Thus, one day, as usual, he left home in the early morning and rowed his boat out into the waves using the moon as his light. After casting his net three times, each time it pulled so heavily that his hands could barely bear it, and it was so heavy it seemed the net might break. Though he had not caught thousands of fish, thinking he would not let even a few large fish escape, his heart was joyful as he somehow managed to pull up the nets. In the first net, he pulled up the large, already rotting carcass of a donkey. Next, he pulled up a horse basket filled with sand and mud. And then, he pulled up an enormous amount of shells, stones, mud, and the like.
