　蔵殿御一所に仰出けるは一揆共有馬之内原之
　古城に楯籠由内々注進有り希るか俄に数百艘
　之舩を集城を出んとする聞え有り推量す
　る尓嶋原之城を重而攻ん為成扁し然は敵之
　来らぬ内に松倉立花両家之人数は嶋原
　之城に入て堅守り鍋嶋有馬両家之軍勢は密
　に城之近辺に扣て郷人舟ゟ取上り城辺に近く所
　を内外与梨茂之合一人茂不洩可討捕由家
　老之面々江可申渡との仰に依而早川其夜之七
　つ時分に多比良村に来り稲次に逢而上使之御下

　知申け連は壱岐平右衛門に云希るは凡郷人国に
　叛く時は野間之勝負を不好して要害に篭
　る事勿論也今日諸勢打向与聞て是永に城を
　可出道理奈し注進申者之誤ならんと云平
　右衛門夫ゟ有馬内記陣所に置り件之旨趣を述
　け連は壱岐は如何被申哉与云々依而志か〳〵の由
　を云け連は内記平右衛門与同道して壱岐か陣
　屋に来り両人相談之上に而平右衛門に云聞せ希る
　は其方之急き先江皈り内膳殿十蔵殿に可申
　上様は昨日被仰出趣家老共に可申聞た免途

現代語訳

一揆の者どもが有馬の内（領内）にある原の古城に立て籠もっているとの内々の注進があった。まれなことであるが、にわかに数百艘の船を集めて城を出ようとしているとの知らせがある。推量するに、嶋原の城を再び攻めるためであろう。そうであれば、敵が来ないうちに、松倉・立花両家の人数は嶋原の城に入って堅く守り、鍋島・有馬両家の軍勢は密かに城の近辺に控えて、郷人（一揆勢）が舟から上陸し城辺に近づいたところを、内外から漏れなく討ち捕らえるよう、家老の面々に申し渡すべきとの仰せにより、早川はその夜の七つ時分（午前4時頃）に多比良村に来り、稲次に会って上使のご下知を申し伝えた。

壱岐（平右衛門）に言うには、「およそ郷人が国に叛く時は、野間（野外）での勝負を好まず、要害に籠もることは道理である。今日、諸勢が打ち向かうと聞いて、今さら城を出る道理はない。注進を申した者の誤りであろう」と言った。平右衛門はそれより有馬内記の陣所に赴き、件の趣旨を述べたところ、壱岐はいかがお申しになるかと言った。そこで（壱岐が）しかじかの由を言ったところ、内記と平右衛門が同道して壱岐の陣屋に来り、両人相談の上で、平右衛門に言い聞かせるには、「あなたが急ぎ先に帰り、内膳殿・十蔵殿に申し上げるべき様は、昨日仰せ出された趣を家老どもに申し聞かせるつもりであるが、途中で…」

There had been a secret report that the rebels had entrenched themselves in the old castle of Hara within the Arima domain. Unusually, there were also reports that several hundred boats were being assembled and that they appeared to be preparing to leave the castle. It was surmised that this was in preparation for another attack on Shimabara Castle. Therefore, before the enemy could advance, the forces of the Matsukura and Tachibana houses were to enter Shimabara Castle and defend it firmly, while the forces of the Nabeshima and Arima houses were to quietly station themselves near the castle, so that when the rebels came ashore from their boats and approached the castle, they could be surrounded from both inside and outside and captured without a single one escaping. In accordance with this command, Hayakawa came to Tahira village at around the seventh hour of that night (approximately 4 a.m.) and met with Inatsugu to convey the orders of the senior envoy.

He told Iki (Heizaemon): "It stands to reason that when peasants rebel against the country, they do not prefer open battle in the field but rather take refuge in fortifications. Having heard that all forces are advancing today, there is no reason for them to leave the castle now. The report must be an error on the part of the informant." Heizaemon then proceeded to the encampment of Arima Naiki to explain the matter, asking what Iki had to say. When (Iki) explained the situation in detail, Naiki and Heizaemon went together to Iki's encampment. After the two consulted, they said to Heizaemon: "You should hurry back ahead of us and report to Lord Naizen and Lord Jūzō that although we intend to relay the instructions given yesterday to the chief retainers, along the way…"
