接種を受ける者は日々に増加し、月々に広がり、伝播して各国の郷
村に及んでいる。思うに、この技術を行おうと欲する者は、
まず高度な学識を持つ人に師事して、よくその形状や経過等の正しい徴候
を研究し、よくその種痘法・種痘術の要旨を理解すべきである。
そうでなければ、その偉大な効果・徳力を発揮することができない。草の根
医師や根拠のない輩が牛痘の理を明らかにせず、種痘術の方法を
わきまえず、みだりにこれを伝種して治療を誤り、人を害する
者が往々にしてあろうとしている。また、その種痘が真正でないため
に再び天然痘に感染するに及んで、その責任を牛痘に帰して
罵って「益がない」と言うことも、また起こりうることである。私は

もとより無知蒙昧でその学術の精微を得ていないので、どうして能くその
説を尽くすことができようか。ただ西洋医学のモー氏に師事して質問した
ところの説を簡単に掲示するのみである。もし有識の士がいて
私の言葉の不正を叱正してくれれば、私にとってその幸いは大きい
であろう。

説によると、牛の痘は大体初生から三年の間に
患うという。また、ある説によると牛に痘瘡の流行するのは
常に人痘の流行する前年においてするという。また牛に
