現代語訳

屋中では軒を横向きに開くことが多く、東向きまたは西向きである。庭院の中には小さな山や石、樹木として黄楊、烏木、檜、松の類を設置し、必ず剪定して束ね整然とし、方形や円形に層々と趣がある。芝草は絨毯のように極めて細かく軟らかで、寸ほどに柔らかく結ばれ土と一緒になって散らばらず、山の上下に満遍なく敷かれている。または小さな石の池を置いて魚を畜い、その中央に小石を立て、石の上に鉄蕉などの小木を植えて観賞用とする。

村の道は皆極めて広く清潔で、多くは細い葉の小竹を編んで屏籬を作り、葉を剪定して揃え、方正で整然と緻密である。村落は皆このようになっている。寺院の前では黄楊を列植し、剪定して方形に束ね、葉が密生して壁のように数十歩ほど続く。また冬青のような葉を持つ樹があり、六、七月に小さな白い花を咲かせ、梔子のような香りで極めて芬烈である。土名を十里香といい、これも截断して籬屛とし、王宮に至るまでの道の数里に亘って植えられている。

米廩
米を蔵する廩も地上四、五尺に懸けられ、遠望すると草亭のようである。下に十六本の柱を施し、柱間の空いた処は人が通行できる。上は板の閣となっている。官倉は皆このようである。村民は数家が共同で一つの亭を作り、米を蔵し、その中を分担して日々守望する。

In houses, windows are often opened sideways, facing either east or west. In the courtyards, small artificial hills, stones, and trees such as boxwood, ebony, cypress, and pine are arranged, always pruned and bundled in order, shaped into squares or circles with layers creating visual interest. The turf grass is like a carpet, extremely fine and soft, growing in tufts about an inch high, bound together with soil so it doesn't scatter, spread evenly across the hills above and below. Sometimes small stone ponds are placed to keep fish, with small stones erected in the center, and small trees like iron plantain planted on the stones for ornamental purposes.

Village paths are all extremely wide and clean, mostly made by weaving small bamboo with fine leaves into screening fences, with leaves trimmed evenly, square, orderly, and densely woven. All villages are like this. In front of temples, boxwood trees are planted in rows, pruned and bundled into square shapes, with leaves so dense they form walls extending for dozens of paces. There are also trees with leaves like holly that bloom with small white flowers in the sixth and seventh months, fragrant like gardenia and extremely aromatic. The local name is "ten-ri incense" (ten-mile fragrance), also cut to make hedge screens, lining the roads for several ri leading to the royal palace.

Rice Granaries
Rice storage granaries are also suspended four to five shaku above ground, appearing like grass pavilions from a distance. Sixteen pillars are installed below, with spaces between pillars allowing people to pass through. The upper part forms a board storehouse. All official granaries are built this way. Village residents have several families jointly build one pavilion to store rice, dividing the responsibility to guard and watch it daily.
