With the intention of consulting about family succession, he left the Shibuya house and thereafter took his biological mother's family name, changing his name to Eguchi Eizen. In Kanbara District of Echigo Province, he married the daughter of Mizuhara Nagatake. Kanbei was the younger brother of Hori Hanemon Nagamasa, a hereditary retainer of Aizu, and served the domain as a 200-koku samurai. However, in the early Genroku period, he was sentenced to banishment for some crime and his family line was discontinued.
From his marriage to Nagatake's daughter were born Hayashi Kizaemon Mitsutomo, Kishi Ryōseki, and Busai. Busai was born on the 9th day of the 3rd month of Shōtoku 4 (1714), Year of the Horse, at Mizuhara, and was initially called Katō Daigorō.
Later, as Katō Zen'an, owing to his father's connections, he was taken care of by the Shibuya Ryōtetsu family. In the 4th month of Genbun 3 (1738), Year of the Dog, as requested by his adoptive father Kyōan, he was appointed as an adopted son-in-law and changed his name to Kōhaku.
In the 12th month of Genbun 4 (1739), Year of the Sheep, because adoptive father Kyōan was serving diligently with great effort, he was granted a five-person stipend as training allowance.
1. In the 7th month of the same 5th year (1740), Year of the Monkey, as requested by his親仲間 (fellow retainers), he was granted his first audience with the lord.
