[Continuation from previous folio] ...(the zōshō official) appeared but was told his attendance was not required and left. It should be noted that today's proceedings had not been announced in advance to the members of the shrine priesthood (shoku-chū), and the gathering had been arranged solely through consultation between Hokaku and Kuniuji. This was the continuation of the recording of court ranks and appointments since the imperial sanction (chokukyō) granted last winter. Item: Regarding the conversation with Suenaga — concerning the matter of Hodo's retirement from office, which had been submitted to the meeting hall (kaisho) some days ago: although it was considered a reasonable request, it was firmly conveyed that carrying out such a matter at this particular time would not be appropriate, and that for now he should reconsider and ensure that no public announcement of the retirement be made. Accordingly, the matter was left as it stood. Item: From around the middle of the first watch of the night (around 8 p.m.), a fire broke out in Kyoto. The location was the crossroads of Funahashi, and the flames spread in all four directions. The fire was extinguished around the half of the eighth hour (around 3 a.m.). Upon receiving word of this at the meeting hall, it was decided that they should go to pay their respects at the Nijō official quarters (go-yakusho). Gyōkyū and Hodo proceeded to the Council Hall, and their attendants assembled; however, the manservant (chūgen) Gonbei reported: "Looking to the northwest, it does not appear to be south of Ichijō. There is no need to proceed to either the Imperial Palace or the official quarters. In the great fire of the Daimonjiya in years past, a visit was made to the Palace, but not to Nijō." Upon hearing this, the party returned from the Council Hall to their lodgings. When they made enquiries the following morning, they confirmed it had indeed been the Funahashi fire. Twenty-First Day, Hour of the Sheep [early afternoon], Clear with some clouds; light rain from after noon Item: Around the half of the Hour of the Snake (approximately 10 a.m.), a summons arrived from the Commissioner (go-bugyō), the Honorable Hino Benden, addressed to the chief priest. It stated that there was official business, and that the general representatives of the shrine should appear immediately. Separately, an attached note written on cut paper (senshi) indicated that there was an inquiry concerning the matter of the small folded paper (ko-origami) relating to court ranks. Immediately, the general representatives Gyōkyū and Hodo presented themselves, whereupon the zōshō official Mizutani Moku came out and conveyed the following: "In the records concerning Nagatoki's promotion to the Fifth Rank, the interval (nakаoki) is recorded as twenty-two years; however, it is believed this should be twenty-one years. Please investigate the matter further, and if there is indeed a discrepancy, submit the corrected document as soon as it is ready." The general representatives acknowledged this and returned, stating that they would investigate thoroughly, make the necessary corrections, and submit them early the following day. Hodo then said: "Regarding the precedents (kanrei) for Suenaga's promotion to Junior Fourth Rank, Upper Grade (jushii no jō), I submitted supplementary precedents (betsu-rei) the other day in accordance with instructions. In addition, I brought along a personal memorandum I had made concerning cases of shrine officials (hafuri-kan) of affiliated shrines (sessha) who received imperial sanction for Junior Fourth Rank, Upper Grade at the ages of forty-one, forty-two, or forty-three. Furthermore, regarding the shrine official of Ōta Shrine who holds the title of Zusho no Kami (Head of the Bureau of Books and Drawings)..."
