大凡日本国内の産物外国人の大に欲する者は
蚕卵紙（たねがみ）其外とも之を開港場所にて是まての如
く交易品にすると彼の本国へ持渡りて売捌を
為すと其利益雲泥の差ひあるのみならす我国
にのみありて彼国商売繁昌の事を目撃（まのあたり）経験（けいけん）す
るにあらざれば眼前の齟齬（くひちがい）まで気の付かぬ事
現代語訳
視して条約を軽んじ、権謀術数を用いて信用を失い、あるいは過酷な禁令を出してその怒りを激し、ついに彼らが軍を出動させる大義名分を与えることになった。それ利益のある所には必ず害もこれに伴う。慎まなければならないのではないか。国は本来富強でなければならない。富強の根本は必ず知識に依らなければならない。そうして後に交通の利害は自ずと明らかになるであろう。この編を読む人は、ますます愛国の心を厚くして知見を開き、学術を究め、日夜怠ることなく努力されることを希望する。

Where there is profit, harm necessarily follows. Should we not be cautious? A nation must fundamentally be wealthy and strong. The foundation of wealth and strength must necessarily rely on knowledge. Only then will the advantages and disadvantages of foreign intercourse become clear. I earnestly hope that those who read this volume will deepen their patriotic spirit, broaden their knowledge and insights, pursue learning and the arts, and strive tirelessly day and night.
Methods of Silkworm Egg Commerce

Generally speaking, among the products of Japan that foreigners greatly desire are silkworm egg papers (tanegami) and others. There is not only a vast difference in profit between trading these as commercial goods at the open ports as has been done until now versus taking them back to their home countries for sale, but unless one remains only in our country and directly witnesses and experiences the flourishing of commerce in their countries, one cannot notice even the discrepancies right before one's eyes.
