航海中の日用の衣服その他必需品は、すべて一つの箱に詰め、「キャビン」（居間ということである）と箱に書き付けて飛脚船問屋へ渡せば、これを別にその客の部屋に置き、日々開閉が自由である。もし外荷物と同様に積み込むときは、たとえ何の品が必要であっても、各地の港に到着の時でなければ決して取り出すことができない。
航海中の衣服は、少しの金を惜しまず、すべて清潔に仕立て、かつ着替えを沢山用意すべきである。とりわけ下着は少なくとも三十枚以上用意すべきである。その理由は、中国の香港より先に到るに従って気候が甚だ炎熱になるため、日々着替えて、途中の港に一日或いは二三日停泊の間に直ちに洗濯すべきだからである。これまで初めて航海する日本人は、このような事に注意せず、船中で甚だ見苦しく、外国人の嘲笑を免れないという。

For daily clothing and other essential items during the voyage, one should pack everything in one box, write "Cabin" on the box (meaning living quarters), and hand it to the mail ship agent. This will be placed separately in the passenger's room, allowing free opening and closing daily. If packed together with other cargo, even if any item is needed, it can never be retrieved except when arriving at various ports.
Clothing for the voyage should be tailored entirely in a clean manner without begrudging a small amount of money, and plenty of changes of clothes should be prepared. Particularly, undergarments should be prepared in quantities of at least thirty or more pieces. The reason is that as one proceeds beyond Hong Kong in China, the climate becomes extremely hot, requiring daily changes of clothes and immediate washing during one or two to three days of anchorage at ports along the way. Japanese people making their first voyage have thus far paid no attention to such matters, appearing very unseemly on board and being unable to escape the mockery of foreigners.
