日本人として外国の衣服を着用するのは誠に不都合なことであるが、乗船すれば断然洋服に変えるべきである。これは奇を好むのではなく、ただ便利のためである。日本風では風雨の時に草履などで甲板上を歩行することができず、また船が動揺して偶々船に酔ったり或いは少しの病気でも自然に入浴や身だしなみも清潔にできず、肌も垢つき、袖の間或いは裾の辺りから時々醜い体を露して最も見苦しいことである。
衣服の着替えは、まず通常の洋服三四着、下着三四十枚、夏服四五着、寝巻き三四着（夏服は白か鼠色の麻布或いは絽などで仕立てるべし）。
イギリス・フランス船ならば大凡一ヶ月ほどは我が国の六七月頃の気候である。アメリカ船ならば炎熱の所はわずか十余日である。乗船の後、まずスチュワードといって賄い方の小遣いに三ドルないし五ドルのチップを内々に渡すべきである。これによって航海中の起床就寝、飲食ともに給仕の世話が大いに異なる。

While it is truly inconvenient for a Japanese person to wear foreign clothing, once aboard ship one should definitely change to Western dress. This is not from a preference for novelty, but purely for convenience. In Japanese style, one cannot walk on deck wearing straw sandals during wind and rain, and when the ship rolls and one occasionally becomes seasick or even slightly ill, one naturally cannot bathe or groom oneself cleanly, the skin becomes dirty with grime, and unsightly parts of the body are sometimes exposed through the sleeves or around the hem, making for a most unseemly appearance.
For changes of clothing, first prepare the usual Western clothes in three to four sets, undergarments in thirty to forty pieces, summer clothes in four to five sets, and nightwear in three to four sets (summer clothes should be made of white or gray linen or gauze).
On British or French ships, for about one month the climate is like that of our June or July. On American ships, the extremely hot areas last only about ten days. After boarding, one should first discreetly give a tip of three to five dollars to the person called a steward, who handles the catering. Due to this, the service for sleeping, waking, and meals during the voyage will be greatly different.
