このようにして持参した品の過半を売却すれば、その後の品は見切りをつけ、少しく安価であっても早く売り切って引き上げるのを上策とする。長引くときは費用も多分にかかり、だんだん時候も遅れるので、長くとも三十日位で売り払うよう心がけるべきである。だんだん遅れるにしたがってその価格は下落するとも、必ず高くなることはない。
また大量を一度に売却しようとするならば、パブリックオークション（競売）という売り方を行うべきである。この仕方は、まずマガジンという店舗を借り、蚕卵紙を並べ、新聞紙で「日本最上品蚕卵紙何万枚、日本商人何某、何町何号の店舗において、来る何日から何日まで幾日の間大安売りする」ということを出せば、百万枚あるいは二百万枚の品も直ちに売り切れになるのである。通例の競売は口銭・運上等合わせて五分ほどで足りるであろう。

In this manner, once more than half of the goods brought over have been sold, it is best policy to make a clearance decision on the remaining items and quickly sell them off and withdraw, even at slightly reduced prices. When things drag on, expenses also mount considerably, and the season gradually becomes later, so one should make efforts to sell everything within thirty days at most. As time progressively passes, even if the prices fall, they will never necessarily rise again.
Also, if one intends to sell large quantities all at once, one should employ a selling method called "public auction" (competitive selling). This method involves first renting a magazine (store), arranging the silkworm egg cards, and placing a newspaper advertisement stating "Japanese finest quality silkworm egg cards, so many tens of thousands of sheets, Japanese merchant so-and-so, at store number so-and-so on such-and-such street, will have a great sale from such-and-such date to such-and-such date for so many days." If this is done, even one or two million sheets of goods can be sold out immediately. The usual auction requires only about five percent for commission fees, transportation taxes, and other charges combined.
