我国開港前は西洋にては土耳格の産を第一と

西洋各国の養蚕地は、スペインからフランス、ライン河辺からイタリア、トルコの都府コンスタンティノープル辺に至るまでを限界とする。これらの国々は気候が大同小異にして、養蚕に適宜の地であるとされる。
我が国開港前は、西洋においてはトルコの産を第一とし、次にイタリア並びにスペイン・ポルトガル辺において産するものを常用のものとしていた。しかし近来両三年間、イタリアにて製する蚕種が大いに出来損ないしより、日本種が一層上品となり、西洋にて蚕卵の製産は漸々衰微に属するという。

The silkworm-raising regions of Western countries extend from Spain to France, from the Rhine River area to Italy, and to the vicinity of Constantinople, the capital of Turkey. These countries have climates that are generally similar and are considered suitable lands for sericulture.
Before our country opened its ports, in the West, Turkish products were considered first-class, followed by those produced in Italy, Spain, and Portugal, which were used as standard varieties. However, in recent years, as the silkworm eggs produced in Italy have greatly deteriorated, Japanese varieties have become even more superior, and silkworm egg production in the West is said to be gradually declining.
Through several years of recent experience, our country's silkworm eggs have become of world-class quality.
