あたふべからず
一／冬瓜（とうがん｜かもうり又とうくわ） 毒（どく）なし小便（せうべん）を通（つう）じかわきをとゞめ気（き）を益（ます）と
いへども痘中（とうちう）五日（いつか）より十日（とうか）までは禁（きん）ずべし
十日の後（のち）は妨（さまたげ）なし塩噌（ゑんそ）に和（くわ）し煮熟（にじゆく）して

一／馬歯莧（すべりひゆ） 毒なし気（き）をおぎない熱（ねつ）をのぞき九窮（きうきやう）を通（つうず）

つきしぼりてその汁（しる）をよく煮（に）つめて痂（かさぶた）の
上（うへ）にその汁（しる）をぬれば瘡痂（かさぶた）おちて後（のち）あとつかぬ
といふ説（せつ）あり
一／慈菇（くわい） 毒（どく）あり痘中痘後百日／禁（きん）ずべし若（もし）これを
喰（くら）ふときは余（よ）どくをはつすといふ説（せつ）あり忌（いむ）べし
一／草石蚕（ちよろぎ） 毒（どく）なし痘中（とうちう）首尾（しゆび）用（もち）ひて妨（さまたげ）なし生（なま）にて
喰（くろ）ふべからず塩噌（ゑんそ）に和（くわ）して煮（に）喰（くろ）ふべし
一／石蜜（かうりざとう） 毒なし口（くち）のかわくを止（と）め心肺（しんはい）を潤（うるお）し痘中（とうちう）

与えてはならない。
一 冬瓜（とうがん｜かもうり又はとうくわ） 毒はない。小便を通じ、渇きを止め、気を益すと
いえども、痘疹中の五日より十日までは禁じるべきである。
十日の後は問題ない。塩味噌に和えて煮熟して
与えるべきである。十日以後は食べてはならない。冷症を発症
するといわれる。
一 馬歯莧（すべりひゆ） 毒はない。気を補い、熱を除き、九窮を通じる。
痘疹中は与えてはならない。痘疹後十一日の後はよく湯煮
をして塩味噌に和えて用いるべきである。酢で与えて
はならない。また痘瘡の後、日が久しく瘢痕が取れず、もし痂

が厚く肉中に陥り入ったものは、後に必ず疱瘡の
痕がつく。これを俗に「みっちゃ」（又は「あばた」ともいう）という。莧を
搗き絞ってその汁をよく煮詰めて痂の
上にその汁を塗れば、瘡痂が落ちて後に痕がつかない
という説がある。
一 慈菇（くわい） 毒がある。痘疹中・痘疹後百日間は
禁じるべきである。もしこれを食べる時は余毒を発症するという説がある。忌むべきである。
一 草石蚕（ちょろぎ） 毒はない。痘疹中は最初から最後まで用いて問題ない。生で
食べてはならない。塩味噌に和えて煮て食べるべきである。
一 石蜜（こうりざとう） 毒はない。口の渇きを止め、心肺を潤し、痘疹中は

- Winter melon (tōgan | kamouri or tōkuwa) Non-toxic. Although it promotes urination, stops thirst, and benefits qi,
it should be prohibited from the fifth to the tenth day during smallpox.
After the tenth day, there is no problem. It should be mixed with salted miso and cooked thoroughly
before giving. After the tenth day, it should not be eaten. It is said to cause
cold symptoms.
- Purslane (suberihiyu) Non-toxic. It supplements qi, removes heat, and opens the nine orifices.
It should not be given during smallpox. After smallpox, after the eleventh day, it should be well boiled
and mixed with salted miso for use. It should not be given
with vinegar. Also, after smallpox, when scars do not fall off for a long time, if the scabs

are thick and sunken into the flesh, they will inevitably leave
smallpox scars. This is commonly called "mitcha" (also called "abata"). If purslane is
pounded and squeezed, and its juice is well boiled down and applied
on top of the scabs, the scabs will fall off and leave no scars afterward,
according to one theory.
- Water chestnut (kuwai) Toxic. It should be prohibited for one hundred days
during and after smallpox. If this is eaten, it is said to cause residual toxins. It should be avoided.
- Chinese artichoke (chorogi) Non-toxic. It may be used throughout the course of smallpox without problem. It should not be eaten
raw. It should be mixed with salted miso and boiled before eating.
- Rock sugar (kōrizatō) Non-toxic. It stops thirst in the mouth, moistens the heart and lungs, and during smallpox
