再発（さいほつ）して凉及を召れしに凉及其とき宿に居り碁を囲（かこ）みて
ありけるがひたすら其事にのみうちかゝりて余念（よねん）なくたま〳〵
答る事もたゝ碁になぞらへて諷奏（ふうそう）しさらに動（うご）くべきけしき
も見へざれは 勅使もいまはあきれはて其 場（ば）を立て返

けるが家人凉及か前（まへ）に進み此病人は何と申病にて候かと問（と）ひ
ければ凉及 応（こたへ）てこれは鈍丸（どんぐわん）といふ病なりといふ家人いぶかり
いまた曽（かつ）て聞なれぬ病ひ何としたる病にて候やと問へは今日
より一ヶ月を経（へ）なば旦那寺（だんなでら）の坊主（はうす）か来て鈍丸（どんくわん）々々（〳〵）といふ病

再発して涼及を召したが、涼及はその時宿にいて囲碁を打っていた。ひたすらその事にのみ集中して他に心を向けることなく、たまたま答える事も、ただ囲碁になぞらえて遠回しに奏上し、少しも動こうとする様子も見えなかった。勅使も今は呆れ果てて、その場を立って帰られた。また参内を急ぐようにと勅使が二度に及んでも、涼及は参内しなかった。ついに崩御されてしまって、その勅命に違った罪により、京都追放となったのである。最初から天聴が塞がって御養生の時期を逸し、再びの御悩みに医者を召すのは無益なことと覚悟して参内しなかった心持ちは、非常に変わった人というべきか。また、ある豪家の

病人を涼及が診察したが、涼及はその病人を診察してただ黙っていた。家人が涼及の前に進み出て「この病人は何という病気でございますか」と問うと、涼及は答えて「これは鈍丸という病気である」と言った。家人は怪しんで「まだかつて聞いたことのない病気ですが、どのような病気でございますか」と問うと、「今日から一ヶ月経てば、菩提寺の坊主が来て『鈍丸、鈍丸』と言う病気である」と言った。家人が病名を問うたので、このように答えたのであろう。この鈍丸の病気となるのも、飲食や女色の節度を失い、養生の時期を逸しては、良医であってもどうにもならない。医者ばかりを頼みにせず、平生を慎むべきである。

The illness recurred and Ryōkyū was summoned, but at that time Ryōkyū was at his lodging playing go. He was entirely absorbed in the game with no other thoughts, and when he occasionally responded, he would only speak in metaphors relating to go, making indirect responses, showing not the slightest intention of stirring. The imperial messenger was now completely exasperated and left the scene to return. Even when the imperial messenger came twice urging him to hasten to court, Ryōkyū would not attend court. Finally, His Majesty passed away, and due to his crime of disobeying the imperial command, he was banished from the capital. From the beginning, knowing that imperial ears were closed and the proper time for convalescence had been missed, he resolved that summoning a physician for the recurring illness would be futile and did not attend court - such an attitude might be called that of an extraordinarily eccentric person. summoned Ryōkyū for a patient, Ryōkyū examined the patient but simply remained silent. When a family member approached Ryōkyū and asked, "What illness does this patient have?" Ryōkyū replied, "This is an illness called 'dongan' (dull pill)." The family member, puzzled, asked, "This is an illness we have never heard of before - what kind of illness is it?" He replied, "If a month passes from today, a monk from your family temple will come and say it is an illness called 'dongan, dongan.'" Since the family member asked for the name of the illness, he probably answered in this way. Even with this "dongan" illness, if one loses moderation in food, drink, and sexual relations, and misses the proper time for health care, even an excellent physician can do nothing. One should not rely solely on doctors but should be prudent in daily life.
