典薬（てんやく）とも種々（しゆ〳〵）の薬をすゝめしも更に寸（[す]ん）功（かう）もなかりしに汝（なんじ）一日の奇（き）
術（しゆつ）を以てかく平（へい）愈（ゆう）おはすをば渠等（かれら）も嘆賞（たんしやう）いたすべし何と評（へう）ず

典薬たちが種々の薬を勧めたが、少しも効果がなかったのに、あなたが一日の奇術をもってこのように平癒されたのを、彼らも感嘆するであろう。何と評価すべきことがあろうか。」涼及が謹んで申し上げたのは、「先に私が御脈を拝見した時、ただ御心気の鬱屈で、これといった症状もなく、蜘蛛を食べた毒と思われる日からの御不予でございます。その鬱気を発散させようと、私は帰路に呉服屋に至り、赤綿を持ち帰り、薬を蜜で練って差し上げましたところ、その赤綿が下ったのを食毒が解けたとお思いになって、御鬱気が急に晴れて、御不予の様子も去ったのでございます」と、自分の奇功とはしなかったのを、両公は非常に感心して褒賞されたのである。他の世間の医者であれば、このような奇

Yet with your one day of miraculous technique, such a recovery has been achieved - they too must surely admire this. What can be said of such skill?" Ryōkyū humbly replied: "When I previously examined the imperial pulse, it was merely a depression of the heart-qi, with no particular symptoms to speak of, and the illness seemed to date from the day when a spider was consumed. To dispel that depressed qi, on my way home I stopped at a silk merchant's shop, brought back red cotton, and offered medicine kneaded with honey. When that red cotton passed through, thinking the food poisoning was resolved, the depressed qi suddenly cleared and the signs of illness departed." He did not claim this as his own miraculous achievement, yet both lords were deeply impressed and bestowed great praise. techniques, and if by chance there had been an effect, they would have kept it secret, not telling anyone, and would have boasted of it as their own achievement. But to speak so plainly shows he truly deserves to be called an excellent physician. The reason he incurred imperial displeasure was this: at that time, due to His Majesty's illness, though Ryōkyū offered medicine and there were daily signs of recovery, it was not yet complete. "During this period of convalescence, medicine should be continued, and you should abstain from morning and evening meals, nighttime visits from palace ladies, and their attendance. If you do not exercise restraint today and the illness worsens in the future, not only we ministers but even the ancient Bian Que could do nothing about it." Only Ryōkyū alone repeatedly offered such admonishments, while the other court physicians, fearful and hesitant, none dared to remonstrate. In the end, matters were left to drift, and after Ryōkyū stopped attending court, finally after a full year had passed, the illness indeed
