せうぶのき《割書：江｜戸》
せきせうぼく
とりつけしば
山野まゝあり葉はくろもしに
似て硬（かた）く夏月葉の間に小
き淡（うす）黄花を開き実を
結ふ熟（しゆく）して黒色 乾（かは）く時は
皺（しは）ありて胡椒（こせう）に似たり味ひ
辛（から）く枝葉の香（にほ）ひ石葛に
似たり此物山胡椒の一種と
なすは詳（つまびらか）ならされとも実の
味ひ辛（からき）を以てこゝに載す

しょうぶの木《江戸での呼び名》
せきしょうぼく
とりつけしば
山野にしばしば見られる。葉は黒文字に
似て硬く、夏に葉の間に小さな
淡黄色の花を咲かせ、実を
結ぶ。熟すと黒色になり、乾燥すると
皺ができて胡椒に似る。味は
辛く、枝葉の香りは石菖蒲に
似ている。この植物を山胡椒の一種と
するのが正しいかどうかは明らかではないが、実の
味が辛いということで、ここに記載する。

Commonly found in mountains and fields. The leaves resemble
those of Lindera umbellata but are hard. In summer, small
pale yellow flowers bloom between the leaves, and it bears
fruit. When ripe, the fruit turns black, and when dried,
it becomes wrinkled and resembles pepper. The taste is
pungent, and the fragrance of the branches and leaves
resembles that of Acorus gramineus. Whether this plant
should be classified as a variety of mountain pepper is
not clear, but it is recorded here because of the pungent taste of its fruit.
