各地の山野に自生している。藤蔓や葡萄に似ており、葉もまた同様で、五つに尖ったものや三つに尖ったものがある。葉の裏面には黄褐色の毛がある。夏に穂状に花を開き、実を結ぶ。形は葡萄に似ているが、やや小さく、熟すと黒色になり、味は酸っぱい。奥州（東北地方）では、この実を使って葡萄酒を作る。この蔓の芯に虫を生じ、これを「かまえびの虫」と呼ぶ。孔雀の餌とする。一種、下野国（野州）の日光山および信州の木曽山中にあるものは、藤蔓が葡萄のようで、葉の形はへちまの葉に似て厚く、裏面に黄赤色の毛がある。房状に小花を開き、実を結ぶ。蘡薁に似て、紫黒色である。

This plant grows wild throughout mountainous and open fields in various regions. Its climbing vines resemble those of grapes (*budō*), and the leaves are likewise similar, being either five-pointed or three-pointed. The undersides of the leaves are covered with yellowish-brown hairs. In summer, it blooms in panicles and bears fruit. The fruit resembles grapes but is somewhat smaller; when ripe it turns black and tastes sour. In Ōshū (the Tōhoku region), the fruit is used to make wine (*budōshu*). The pith of the vine produces insects, which are called "*kama-ebi* insects." These are used as food for peacocks. A separate variety found on Mount Nikkō in Shimotsuke Province (Yashū) and in the Kiso mountains of Shinshū has vines like those of grapes, with leaves resembling those of the luffa (*hechima*), thick in texture and covered with yellowish-red hairs on the underside. It blooms in clusters of small flowers and bears fruit resembling *eiiiku*, but of a purple-black color.
