The vine does not wither in any of the four seasons and grows very vigorously; large specimens can reach twelve *shaku* in girth. In spring, buds emerge from the old vines, and the young shoots are red in color. The leaves are long and similar to those of the pear (*nashi*), with fine serrations around the edges, and the undersides of the leaves are red. In summer, flower clusters bloom between the leaves on the branches. The shape resembles that of *matatabi* (silver vine, *Actinidia polygama*) and is pale yellow in color. Fruits subsequently form on long stalks that hang downward, ripening in winter. They are green with fine brownish spots and have a skin resembling that of a pear. When ripe, they become soft and sweet, with a pleasant flavor. The fruit contains fine seeds that germinate readily. 【Left Page】 A related variety: Woody (arborescent) form The vine does not wither in any of the four seasons. In spring, buds emerge from the old vines. The leaves resemble those of the preceding entry but are much smaller, with thorn-like serrations around the edges. Both the flowers and fruit are similar to those of the preceding entry but considerably smaller.
