秦椒（しんせう）さんせう ひんせう《割書：丹｜波》 土椒（とせう）《割書：蜀椒｜條下》
樹（しゆ）高さ一丈余に至（いた）る葉は皁莢（さいかち）に似て細く周りに細き鋸歯（かゝり）あり葉
の中に淡緑の班（はん）あり枝に三四分の刺を生す樹に雄（ゆう）と雌（し）とあり
雄（ゆう）なるものは房（ほう）をなして小黄花を攅族（さんそく）し実を結はす雌（し）なる
ものは花 稀（まれ）にして実を結ふ形赤小豆の大さにして気孔（きこ う ）ある

秦椒（しんしょう）さんしょう ひんしょう《丹波》 土椒（どしょう）《蜀椒の条下》
樹の高さは一丈余り（約3メートル以上）に達する。葉は皁莢（さいかち）に似て細く、周囲に細かい鋸歯がある。葉の中に淡緑色の斑点がある。枝に三、四分（約1センチ）の刺を生じる。この樹には雄と雌がある。雄のものは房状になって小さな黄色い花を密集させ、実を結ばない。雌のものは花が稀で実を結ぶ。形は小豆ほどの大きさで、柚子の皮のような気孔がある。秋になって熟すると朱黒色となり、自然に二つに分かれる。中に細かい黒い種があり、光沢があって鼠の目のようである。この樹の幹回り三、四寸（約9～12センチ）以上のものを削り木として使う。毒を解くと言われている。樹皮には疱瘡のような凹凸があり、蝦蟇（ひきがえる）の背に似ている。この皮を「から○○」と言う。野州日光山の名産である。

The tree reaches a height of over one jō (approximately 3+ meters). The leaves resemble those of the soap pod tree (Gleditsia japonica), are narrow, and have fine serrations around the edges. The leaves have pale green spots. The branches produce thorns of three to four bu (about 1 cm) in length. This tree has both male and female specimens. The male forms clusters of small yellow flowers that bloom densely but do not bear fruit. The female rarely flowers but does bear fruit. The fruit is about the size of an azuki bean and has pores like yuzu citrus peel. When it ripens in autumn, it turns vermillion-black and naturally splits in two. Inside are fine black seeds that are glossy and resemble mouse eyes. Trees with a trunk circumference of three to four sun (about 9-12 cm) or more are used to make medicinal shavings. It is said to neutralize poisons. The bark has pockmarks resembling the back of a toad. This bark is called "kara-○○." It is a famous product of Mount Nikkō in Yashū Province.
