ものがこれである。時珍が
「葉は扁豆・山薬の
類のようである」というのは誤りのよう
に見える。舶来の実
の形状はこの品種で
梧桐子より小さく
しわがあって黒褐色
味は辛い。

Black Pepper (koshō)

Not produced domestically. The fruits are imported
items. There are three types
of botanical illustrations drawn from life
in the reference work. It is a climbing vine
with yellowish-brown stems. The leaves resemble those of
southern Schisandra but are shorter,
without serrated edges, and grow alternately.
Between the leaves, it forms
spikes about two inches long
similar to northern Schisandra.
Each spike bears a small number of fruits
that hang downward. The size is

like sterculia seeds, black in color
with a single white spot.
This is what Shinkō described.
Li Shizhen's statement that
"the leaves resemble those of hyacinth beans and Chinese yam"
appears to be incorrect. The imported fruits
of this variety are
smaller than sterculia seeds,
wrinkled, and blackish-brown in color.
The taste is pungent.
