At dawn I depart from Itabashi post station,
Stretching far away from the northern gate.
Mountains are sparse, and the sun rises early upon them;
The grass is short, and frost lies thick underfoot.
My travel baggage sets out along the eastern road,
The long roadside pavilion cuts across the great plain.
It is not long since I left home,
Yet the wandering traveler's soul is easily consumed with longing.
