During the Eiroku era (1558–1570), Nakamura Heijizaemon, a retainer of the Odawara Hōjō clan, added the Buzen-kata lands in Edo and Nerima to his holdings, and it appears in the Hōjō clan's* bungenchō *(register of retainers' stipends) that a certain person from Kanasoki also held Nerima. In the same document, it is noted that among the holdings of a man called Shimazu Magoshirō, there were lands recorded as "Toshima, Seikōji portion — also present in Nerima."]* According to the *Kamakura Ōsōshi*: On the night of the nineteenth day of the first month of Bunmei 9 (1477), the three men — Akisada, Norifusa, and Sadamasa — agreed among the Uesugi faction that "we cannot prevail with so few troops," and decided to cross over into Kōzuke Province to muster a large force and suppress Kageyasu. With Ōta Dōshin serving as the rear guard (*shingari*), they crossed the Tone River and withdrew to the manor of Nawa. Among those who sided with Kageyasu were Toshima Kageyu-zaemon-no-jō and his younger brother Heizaemon-no-jō, residents of Toshima District in Musashi Province. They fortified Shakujii Castle and Nerima Castle, cutting off the road between Edo and Kawagoe, and so it goes. The same text further states: On the thirteenth day of the fourth month of Bunmei 9, Dōkan marched out from Edo, surrounded the castle at Hiratsuka held by Toshima Heizaemon-no-jō, set fire to the area outside the castle walls, and began to withdraw. However, Toshima (Heizaemon-no-jō) called upon his elder brother Kageyu-zaemon for help, and troops came forth from both Shakujii Castle and Nerima Castle to attack. Thereupon Ōta Dōkan, together with Uesugi Gyōbu-shōyū, Chiba Yoritane, and their forces, hastened to a place called Ekota-hara and Numabukuro, where battle was joined. On the enemy side, starting with Toshima Heizaemon-no-jō, some 150 men from Itabashi, Akatsuka, and elsewhere were killed in the fighting. On the fourteenth day of the same month, they pressed against Shakujii Castle and attacked; the defenders surrendered, and on the eighteenth day of the same month…
