【Double-Page Spread Illustration】 【Right Page】 **Toda River Crossing — Hakuro Gongen Shrine** The source of this river is the Iruma River, which originates in Chichibu. In its lower reaches, the river is also called the Arakawa, and is alternatively known as the Sumidagawa. There is always a ferry crossing here, but when the water level rises, the river spreads as far as Shimura, making the crossing extremely difficult. At such times, travelers would make their way along the embankment, going around via Senju to enter Edo. In former times, it is said that horses were tethered (and held) at Tsutsumimura (Embankment Village). Even now, during times of flooding, horses are still kept there. *Hakuro* (Feather Black) 【Left Page: Illustration only, no text】
