Shimbun Zue (Illustrated News), No. 10 In the province of Awa, in Myōdō Prefecture, there lived a certain Yoshimoto Shinji, an official of the fifteenth grade in government service. In his household was a hired maidservant named Otsune. One night while her master was away, she had barred the doors fast and lay sleepless, when a burglar forced his way in — a single man, a freshly whetted deba knife in his hand and his eyes glittering — demanding, "Out with your money! Out with it!" Startled though she was, Otsune replied, "I am only a hired servant in this house, so I do not know where the money is kept; but the clothing is here," and taking garments from the chest of drawers she handed them over. Yet in her heart she thought, "If even one article should go missing while the master is away, I shall have no excuse to offer" — and being a stout-hearted woman, she quietly took up a naked blade and hid it on her person. The foolish "white wave" (thief), knowing nothing of this, shouldered the clothes and started out — whereupon she slashed at him, crying, "Take that, and know your own folly!" The robber instantly raised his deba knife, and for a while the two fought; but a woman's arm has little strength, and she was on the point of being cut down when the neighbors, hearing the commotion, came rushing to the scene. At the sight of them the robber threw down the goods and fled, so that not a single article was lost. Because this was all owing to Otsune's admirable resolve, the prefectural office bestowed a commendation upon her — a splendid feat indeed.
