Shimbun Zue (Illustrated News), No. 20 Everybody thinks the patrolman (*omawari-san*) is a useless sort of fellow, but his efficacy is by no means small — especially against that disease called Folly, for which he is a sovereign remedy. On the fifth day of the sixth month, at three o'clock in the morning, there was a case of drowning beneath Tenjin Bridge in Osaka. As the rules of such affairs require, the two bodies, male and female, were bound together as they floated. Patrolmen and five or six other persons hauled them out and administered treatment, whereupon they presently revived. The man was one Iimori Sōkichi of Sasaya-chō in Saikyō (Kyoto), a lad in the bloom of twenty-one; the woman was Shizu, mother of a certain Nakajima of Nakadachiuri in the same city, a widow of forty-two and well past her prime. They had been carrying on together for three years, and, having come to the end of their money, threw themselves in. Truly, "love lies beyond all reasoning." Yet for a fellow of barely twenty to try to die together with an old dame past forty — he is the very king of fools. And was it not entirely thanks to the efficacy of "Patrolman's Powder" (*omawari-san*, punning on a medicinal powder) that this desperate malady was cured? Since forty-two and twenty-one come out exactly to a division by two: "Four-two, heaven makes five" — so the widow and her lad: two into two makes one — how happy that they were saved! Composed in celebration by the Master of Yokarō The main article also contains the farewell notes left by the two, but they are omitted here.
