A little after one o'clock in the morning on the eighth day of the sixth month of Meiji 8 (1875), at the house of Satō Rinzō of Shintani-chō, Asakusa, Tokyo: while the master was away, his elder brother Shūkichi happened to be lodging there. As the night wore on, a suspicious noise was heard; he got up to look, lay down again, and then a burglar came clambering right over the mosquito net onto him. In the scuffle the thief shed his clothes and fled stark naked. Shūkichi gave chase, but being lame from an old ailment he was outrun and lost sight of him — with only one good leg, the pursuit came to nothing: such is this tale of a short summer night. What was left behind was the thief's cotton *awase* (lined kimono), his *sanjaku* sash, and something like a chisel, all cast away. Since the household lost not a single article, one may say: "Well, well — what fine spoils you have carried off!" (This story appears in the *Nichinichi Shinbun* [Tokyo Nichinichi Shinbun], No. 1036.)
