"Encourage Virtue, Chastise Vice" — Government-Licensed — Brocade-Picture Newspaper No. 1 The man called Entei, who has built a Western-style house in front of the rear gate of the Goryō Shrine at Hirano-machi in Osaka, is a leading man of "civilization and enlightenment" among the commoner class, and his deeds include many remarkable feats and admirable stories. In particular, it is well known to the public that last year he made the grounds of the former Yanagawa domain mansion at Nakanoshima his own property, erected there a shrine to the Taikō (Toyotomi Hideyoshi), and set up a Western-style bathhouse, a storytellers' hall, teahouses and the like, thus opening up a flourishing place of resort. Now again he has undertaken to install a great many gas lamps within those grounds and to light them all at once, so as to increase the knowledge of the people. He had the machinist Yasuda Yoshifusa carry out the work, and himself took up a tool and dug in the ground to help the work along — when, who would have guessed it, out of the earth he dug up a jar. Looking inside, he found one hundred Kyōhō koban (gold pieces). He is said to have reported the matter at once to the Osaka Prefectural Office. People said to one another that this must be Heaven, moved by Master Entei's exertions for the sake of the country and of the people, supplying him with the funds for his undertaking.
