"Encourage Virtue, Chastise Vice" — Government-Licensed — Brocade-Picture Newspaper
No. 2
O-Kura, wife of a certain Akazawa of No. 37 Hachiman-chō, Eighth Small District of the Second Great District of Osaka, was originally one who had drifted through the sorrowful life of the "river bamboo" — that is, she had served as a prostitute. Yet she had not the least frivolity of heart; she was born straight as a bamboo stalk, and after becoming the wife of this Akazawa she kept her fidelity strictly, having pledged to remain with him for a thousand ages.
Recently her husband fell ill, and reached such a critical state that there was but one chance of life in ten of death. The physicians exhausted every means, but declared there was no longer any remedy. When O-Kura heard this she could not rest still for a moment: night after night she poured cold water over herself in purification and prayed to the gods and buddhas, and in nursing him there was nothing she left undone. Perhaps her sincerity reached Heaven, for the illness, which had seemed certainly fatal, gradually improved, and by now he is said to have recovered completely.
"Where the spirit reaches, it pierces even metal and stone" — truly this is a thing to admire. Even among those raised in the pleasure quarters there may be such a faithful wife as this. What is called "a lotus in the mud" must surely refer to this O-Kura.
