No. 3
O-Shika, the adopted daughter of Irie Heisuke of No. 19, Twenty-first Small District of the First Great District of Osaka, made her living by teaching Edo *hauta* songs and dancing, and with her earnings supported her adoptive father and mother. Despite the frivolous nature of her trade, she was upright in heart and deeply filial.
Her adoptive father Heisuke, however, was a man of bad disposition. He conceived a passion for his adopted daughter O-Shika and repeatedly made advances to her, but she rebuffed him, saying, "Such a thing is unthinkable!" Thereupon he resolved: "In that case I shall divorce my wife and have my way with her." He sent the wife who had lived with him all those years back to her native province of Aki, to Hiroshima, and thereafter, alone with his adopted daughter, he harassed and importuned her night and day; enraged that she would not yield to him, he beat her again and again. When the neighbors heard the commotion and came to remonstrate, asking what the matter was, he replied with perfect composure, "It is because she will not do as I say."
At this conduct of Heisuke's, so contrary to all human decency, even this dutiful daughter was at last utterly appalled. "There is nothing left but to devote my filial service to my adoptive mother," she decided, and one night she left the house pretending to go to the privy. She hung a lantern under the eaves of the privy so that it would seem she was still inside, and then, weeping, all alone, she made the long and unfamiliar journey to Hiroshima in Aki Province in search of her mother. There, it is said, she makes her living by the shamisen she had learned, and supports her adoptive mother.
