"Encourage Virtue, Chastise Vice" — Government-Licensed — Brocade-Picture Newspaper
No. 9
Even one who has erred and done evil may yet receive Heaven's blessing, if he turns his heart back toward good.
A certain Mishima, living in Awaji-machi within the Ninth Small Ward of the First Great Ward of Osaka, had formerly given himself over to dissipation; and when he ran short of means to raise money, he manufactured and passed counterfeit Mitsui notes. The matter came to light at last: on his way home from the Chikugo theater, where he had gone in the company of a geisha, his trail was picked up, and he was arrested and long confined in prison.
There, however, he came to repent his former wrongdoing and reformed his wicked heart. He treated his fellow prisoners with kindness and consideration, and expounded to them the principle that one must never commit crimes; and it is said that so long as this man was there, the prison was exceedingly peaceful.
This came to the ears of the authorities, and although he was a man who had already been sentenced to death, by a special decree his sentence was, from the latter part of the fifth month of this year, commuted to penal servitude for life.
