Encouraging Good and Chastising Evil — Government Licensed — Nishiki-e Newspaper No. 15 Editor: Jishū-sha Illustration: Sasaki Yoshitaki In Ishigaki Village, Takeno District, Chikugo Province, within Mizuma Prefecture, there was a farmer named Takisaku who had two daughters — the elder seven years old, the younger five. The two would often go to a neighboring field to play, and time and again they took up sweet potatoes and eggplants. The owner of the field, thinking they were only children, overlooked it at first; but as it happened again and again he could no longer let it pass, and he went to their father Takisaku and told him what had been going on. Takisaku flew into a rage, insisting, "My children of all people would never do such a thing," and in the end the two came to blows. Takisaku was thoroughly shamed, and brooding over his mortification he thought, "It is because I have such children that even my own face as a parent is dirtied" — a thought no human being ought ever to entertain. That night at twelve o'clock he took his two daughters to the bank of the Chikugo River and, with dreadful cruelty, hurled them with a splash into the water. As he was about to return home he was spotted by a patrolman, and at last he confessed and was bound and taken into custody. To fail to teach one's children is the parent's own crime; yet to kill his little girls — such an act can be likened neither to madness nor to lunacy.
