Encouraging Good and Chastising Evil — Government Licensed — Nishiki-e Newspaper
No. 17
"In wine he set no limit, yet never let it disorder him" — so the ancients admonished us; yet most lovers of drink feel no pleasure unless they drink to the point of disorder. Kawachi Otokichi of Hama-no-chō in Nishinomiya was a man of bad drinking habits who repeatedly committed acts of violence. His father and mother, at their wits' end, admonished him again and again, until at last Otokichi resolved to give up drink. "From tomorrow I swear I shall not touch sake. Since today is my last day before abstaining, let me enjoy one good cup," he said, and with his mother for company he drank one gō, two gō — tipping the flask until his heart should be at ease — and so several shō of sake became the cause of his ruining his whole life (a pun: "mistaking one shō" / "ruining one life"). Soon he was so drunk his tongue would not turn; his original resolve vanished, and as always he began to grumble and pick quarrels. Just then his father came home, and seeing this state of things spoke a word or two of reproof. That remonstrance became the beginning of a brawl: Otokichi flung about whatever came to hand, struck his father, and wounded his mother as well. For this crime he suffered at last the disgrace of being bound with ropes, and from April of this year he was sentenced to ten years' penal servitude. What one must guard against is heavy drinking.
