あいと呼（よ）ぶ婦人（ふじん）あり年（とし）猶（なほ）廿六才なるが
日頃（ひごろ）より柔術（やわら）にも長（たけ）たりしが其（その）妍（かほ）よ

頃（ころ）隣（りん）家（か）の娘（むすめ）を連（つ）れて長柄（ながら）川（がは）の

大坂・舩越町（ふなこしまち）に、骨接ぎ（接骨）を生業とする松本あいという女性がいる。年はまだ二十六歳であるが、日頃から柔術にも長けていた。しかしその容貌が美しかったので、彼女がそれほど強いとは誰も知らなかった。
先ごろ、隣家の娘を連れて長柄川（ながらがわ）の堤を通りかかったところ、川風の寒い、たそがれ（かはたれ）時のことである、四人の荒くれ男が躍り出て、おあいと隣の娘とを二人がかりずつで取り押さえ、手ごめにしようとした。そこでおあいは大いに怒って、組みついてきた一人を川の中へ投げ込み、もう一人を突き倒し、隣の娘を押し伏せてその上にまたがっていた一人の襟髪をつかんでねじ倒し、さらに拳を固めてもう一人の目のあたりを打ちすえたので、男たちはいずれも恐れをなして逃げ散ってしまった。

In Funakoshi-chō in Osaka there is a woman named Matsumoto Ai, whose trade is bonesetting. She is still only twenty-six years old, and she had long been skilled in jūjutsu as well; but because her face was so comely, no one realized how formidable she was.
Not long ago she was passing along the embankment of the Nagara River, accompanied by the daughter of a neighboring household. It was twilight, and the wind off the river was cold, when four ruffians sprang out and seized them — two men to Oai and two to the neighbor's girl — intending to rape them. At this Oai flew into a great rage: she hurled into the river the man who had grappled with her, knocked another sprawling with a thrust, seized by the scruff of the neck the man who had pinned the neighbor's girl down and was straddling her, and twisted him to the ground, then clenched her fist and struck another about the eyes. At this they all took fright and fled in every direction.
