Yūbin Hōchi Shinbun (Postal News), No. 449
That a withered tree should bloom again is something we hear of only in the old tale, as the feat of that famous "Old Man Who Made Withered Trees Blossom" (Hanasaka Jijii). Yet here in Fukuyama in Oshima [southern Hokkaidō] there is a person called Sugihara Mino, whose pastime is flower arrangement. Having studied at the school of Senshō-bō, forty-second headmaster of the Ikenobō of the Western Capital (Kyoto), Mino is said to have attained real mastery of the art.
On the fifth day of the third month, it seems, the plum blossoms that Mino had arranged, after their flowering, set fruit upon their branches, and the fruit gradually ripened — a most auspicious thing indeed. When the master, old Senshō, got some word of this, he composed and bestowed a poem, playing upon Mino's art-name "Tsuruoka" (Crane Hill):
Is Tsuruoka, then, a dwelling where the mountain immortals live?
— this plum branch that bears its auspicious fruit for a thousand ages.
Recorded by Deku Dōjin
[Note: Oshima was one of the eleven provinces of Hokkaidō, established in 1869 (Meiji 2), occupying the southern part of the Oshima Peninsula.]
