Osaka Nichinichi Shimbun, No. 253 Matsu, the daughter of a certain Hamada of Suzami village in Kishū (Kii Province), is nineteen years of age this year. Though she is described as being of a "pure and upright" disposition, in truth she was as supple as a willow bending in the wind, never particular about her partners, exchanging whispered endearments with any man at all. Even back in her home province she was so light of tail that, had she gone to the Tsukuma pot festival, she would have had to wear pot upon pot upon her head [Note 1]; and with that same swiftness she went off to serve at the house of a certain family in Imaki Shinden in Osaka, only to move on at once to the house of Kyūzaburō of Namba village, where the two became man and wife without any go-between. Just as one says "a single layer of clothing is chilly on the skin now" and piles on robe upon robe, so the men she took in secret were layered past counting—she kept lovers on the sly and behaved for all the world like a common harlot. In time the matter came to light. Kyūzaburō, utterly disgusted, thought to drive her out, but feeling that this alone would not satisfy him, he conspired with six or seven of the young men of the neighborhood, hid with them in a small boat off the beach, called Matsu out, lured her aboard, and rowed some five or six chō (about 600 m) offshore, whereupon Kyūzaburō and the rest made sport of her. Matsu felt as though she were being carried off to Onigashima, the Isle of Demons, and was beside herself with terror. Yet who would have guessed it—although such things were her own delight, still, just as too much love of sake ends in a two-day hangover and a splitting head ▲ ▲ and too much love of rice-cakes ends in indigestion and a heavy stomach, so at last she was driven ashore into the reed beds of Chishima Shinden, where she passed the night. To regret one's own conduct afterwards is of no avail—repentance always comes too late.
