Osaka Nichinichi Shimbun, No. 278 The wife of a certain man of the Utsubo district, taking a single apprentice boy with her, set out to worship at Sumiyoshi Shrine; but mistaking the hour, she left the house while it was still dark, and a robber fell upon her and stripped her naked. The apprentice, terrified, hid himself in a field. The woman wept and wailed, but there was no one else about. Being a woman, she could go nowhere naked, and so she begged: "Have mercy—give me at least a loincloth to cover myself." The robber, saying, "This can hardly be worth anything," gave her the hood of a (rickshaw) cart that had been cast aside there, and the woman took it and went away. Just then another robber came along. When the first told him, "I have just now stripped a woman of her clothes and given her the cart hood instead," the other said, "But I had twenty yen sewn into that hood! Even if we take her clothes, it is a loss if we lose the money"—and the two robbers ran off to overtake the woman. Left behind, the apprentice rolled up the clothing that was inside the cart, tucked it under his arm, and flew home, rejoicing to find his master's household safe. When he reported what the two robbers had said, they examined the hood, and sure enough twenty yen in government paper notes were sewn inside it. Waiting for daybreak, they reported the matter to the authorities, and the boy's quick-witted conduct being judged admirable, the robbers' money was granted to the apprentice. This, it is said, occurred on the fifth day of the second month of the Year of the Dog.
