[Lower right of the sheet] Drawn by Sadanobu II, formerly Konobu
Feigning sleep is called "playing the badger" (tanuki), and an aging courtesan is called an "old badger." Such things as these do the world no particular harm; but when a badger turns itself into a piping-hot steamed bun and makes Jūbei grasp a lump of dog dung, or turns itself into a broad sedge hat and blocks the road on a rainy night—that, surely, may be called doing harm.
Of the badger's scrotum said to spread out over eight tatami mats we hear by rumor, but no one has seen the actual thing; and a giant badger six shaku long has never been heard of even in idle gossip. Yet here, in the pages of the newspaper, we may see such a giant badger with our own eyes.
The killing of this great badger took place on the twenty-eighth day of the third month of this year, at Kōjimachi in the Second Small Ward of the Third Great Ward of Tokyo. A policeman named Hara Masanori was making his rounds when he saw the creature ahead of him. He set down his lamp and watched: the badger came up beside the lamp and was about to lick the oil, whereupon Masanori, seizing his chance, struck the great badger dead with his official truncheon.
It is in order to dispel the delusion of the barbarous (foolish) people of the present day, who revere and worship foxes and badgers, that this picture is drawn here.
