有夜強盗（あるよごうどう）二人 押（おし）入り壽造をとらへて村中 有財（ゆうざい）の家に案（あん）
内（ない）せよと罵（のゝし）るに壽造 手早（てはや）く藻切鎌（もきりかま）を携（たづさへ）るを見て
凶賊忽（けうぞくたちま）ち白刀（しらは）を翻（ひらめ）かし切付るを女房（によぼう）ゆきは夫（おつと）を
助（たす）【(け)】んとあせるに甲斐（かひ）も情（なさけ）なく夫は四十年（よそじ）を一 期（ご）として
空（むな）しく一 命（めい）を果（はた）したり倅由松 弟（おとゝ）を連（つ）れ村内
人家戸長（しんかこちやう）の宅迄加勢（いへまでかせい）を触（ふれ）るに
多人数馳（たにんぢうは）せ寄（よ）る間（ま）に賊（ぞく）は逃伸（にけのび）
門辺（かどべ）に倒（たを）るゝ妻（つま）のゆきは最前（さいぜん）
戸口に固（かた）めし一 賊（ぞく）に鉄砲（てつほう）をもて
腹（はら）を撃（うた）れたるよし語（かたり）も果（はて）ず
息絶（いきたへ）たり壽（ながきいのち）もゆきと消（き）へ夫婦（ふうふ）

大阪府下・浦江村の村方小使、壽造（じゅうぞう）の家に、明治七年の夏の頃、ある夜、強盗二人が押し入った。壽造を捕らえて「村じゅうで金のある家へ案内しろ」と罵り立てたが、壽造がすばやく藻切鎌を手に取ったのを見るや、凶賊はたちまち白刃をひらめかせて斬りつけた。女房のゆきは夫を助けようと必死になったが、その甲斐もなく、無情にも夫は四十年をもって一生を終え、むなしく一命を落としてしまった。
倅の由松は弟を連れて、村内の人家から戸長の宅まで走り回って加勢を呼びかけたが、大勢が駆けつけて来る間に賊は逃げ延びてしまった。門のあたりに倒れていた妻のゆきは、「先ほど戸口を固めていたもう一人の賊に、鉄砲で腹を撃たれました」と語り終わらぬうちに息絶えた。
「壽（ながき命）」の名も雪（ゆき）のごとく消え失せ、夫婦連れ立っての死出の山・三途の川——血で血を洗うこの凶賊も、天網（てんもう）から逃れることはかなわず、間もなく捕縛されて斬罪に処せられた。

In the summer of the seventh year of Meiji (1874), two robbers broke one night into the house of Jūzō, a village-office errand man of Urae Village in Osaka Prefecture. Seizing Jūzō, they shouted abuse at him, demanding, "Show us the wealthy houses in this village!" But when they saw Jūzō quickly snatch up a seaweed-cutting sickle, the villains at once flashed their naked blades and cut him down. His wife Yuki struggled desperately to save her husband, but all in vain: pitilessly, at the age of forty, her husband's life came to its end, and he perished for nothing.
Their son Yoshimatsu, taking his little brother with him, ran through the village from house to house and as far as the residence of the kochō (village headman), calling for help; but while the crowd was hurrying to the scene, the robbers made good their escape. The wife Yuki, who had collapsed near the gate, managed to say, "I was shot in the belly with a gun by the other robber, the one who was guarding the doorway just now" — and before she had finished speaking, she breathed her last.
Thus "Jū" — long life — vanished away like "yuki" (snow), and husband and wife together crossed the Mountain of Death and the River of Three Crossings. As for the murderous robbers who had thus washed blood with blood, they could not escape the net of Heaven: before long they were arrested and sentenced to death by beheading.
