In all the world there is nothing so bitter as poverty. Here in Shiomachi 1-chōme, Higashi-daigumi, Osaka Prefecture, there lived a mother and daughter, just the two of them. Having no proper livelihood, they could scarcely raise even a thin wisp of cooking smoke; and on top of this the mother fell ill and took to her bed, so that the daughter grieved from morning till night, at a loss what to do. At such a time, on the night of the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month last past, the mother — pitiful to relate — endured the pain of her illness, slipped out of the house, threw herself from the Sankyū Bridge, and died. The daughter, startled to find the invalid gone, was searching everywhere for her when she heard word that her mother had drowned herself; and no sooner had she heard it than she too leapt from that same bridge. But she happened to fall onto a small boat that was passing by just then, and the boatman tended her carefully, so that her life was spared, they say. This boatman was a man called Gonbei or some such — so a certain person related, and I set it down here just as I heard it.
