徳（とく）島 通（かよひ）の蒸気（しようき）去ル二月廿二日の夜に
淡州 岩屋（いわや）の沖にて船中誤て火を
失し荷物に火移りて火勢盛んに
なるを一同力をつくし鎮（しつ）めんとどう
舟中（せんちう）の乗客（のりきやく）の気も石炭（せきたん）を十倍
して走（はし）る程（ほと）に黒煙天（くろけふりてん）を覆（おゝ）ひ只（たゞ）
一 瞬（しゆん）の間（ま）に陸地へ達（たつ）す二百余人の
乗組辛（のりくみかろふ）じて命を拾ひしは是無事
丸の無事を歓（よろこ）び船司の良（そく）計（ち）
憤発（をとこき）を感（かん）ずべし

日々新聞 第十六号
徳島通いの蒸気船が、去る二月二十二日の夜、淡州（淡路島）岩屋の沖で、船中の不始末から出火し、積荷に燃え移って火の勢いが盛んになった。乗組一同は力を尽くして消し止めようとし、同じ船に乗り合わせた客たちの気持ちも、石炭を十倍焚いたほどの勢いで（船は）走り、黒煙が天を覆うなか、ただ一瞬のうちに陸地へたどり着いた。二百余人の乗組・乗客がかろうじて命を拾ったのは、まさに「無事丸」の名のとおり無事であったことを喜ぶべきであり、また船長の機転（速智）と男気ある奮発ぶりこそ感嘆すべきものである。

On the night of the 22nd day of the Second Month last, a steamship on the Tokushima run accidentally caught fire on board off Iwaya in Awa Province (Awaji Island). The flames spread to the cargo and grew fierce; the whole crew strove with all their might to put it out, while the spirits of the passengers aboard the same vessel burned as though ten times the coal had been stoked—so swiftly did the ship run that, with black smoke covering the sky, in but a single instant she reached the shore. That the more than two hundred crew and passengers barely escaped with their lives is indeed cause to rejoice that the *Buji-maru* ("Safety Maru") lived up to her name; and we must admire the captain's quick wit and his manly resolve in the crisis.
