In Kanagawa Prefecture, in the village of Shimo-sakunobe, the son of Sekiguchi Jirōbei is only thirteen years old, yet he is strong and a stouthearted lad who fears nothing. On the eighth day of the sixth month of Meiji 8 (1875), a great, aged fox seized one of the neighbor's chickens in its mouth and ran off with it. Thinking, "How sorry the man who lost it must be," the boy gave chase, stole into a barley field, and when the old fox showed itself above the ears of barley, he seized it alive, taking no account of how fat and heavy it was. He returned the chicken to the neighbor, killed the fox with a single blow, cooked it, and made it into a soup, saying, "Everyone, eat!" — a scene just like the tale of Nasuno. [Referring to the killing of the nine-tailed fox of Nasuno by Miura-no-suke and Kazusa-no-suke.] A hero whose deed puts to shame even the arrowheads of those two famous "suke," Miura-no-suke Yoshiaki and Kazusa-no-suke Hirotsune — that he brought the beast down single-handed at about thirteen years of age makes him a splendid fellow indeed, so the report reads.
Reported in issue No. 126.
