Collection of Daily News from the Provinces — Meiji 8 (1875) [written horizontally] Now then, saving a human life is the fount of all good deeds, and is something everyone should strive to do. —— Shigehiro [artist] ; Kawaden [block-carver/publisher] On the night of the twenty-third day of the Fourth Month, at about eleven o'clock, a woman threw herself into the water from Kiyozu Bridge on the Dōtonbori canal. She was a woman called Koma, thirty-four years of age this year, who had been lodging at an inn called Tawara (Hoteiya) at Mizonokawa in Kōzu-chō. Four years ago she lost her husband Otogorō, and it may well be that, after brooding over all sorts of worries, she cast herself into the river. A man from a nearby bathhouse immediately dived in, and at the direction of a policeman she was pulled out and given first aid, so that her life was spared. He was praised by the authorities as "a truly dependable bathhouse man" — a splendid thing indeed. 〽 Her body, soiled with the mud of the river bottom, was washed clean — and drawn up — by the Kiyozu bath (Kiyozu Bridge). Recorded by Ryūō (Willow-and-Cherry)
