新聞 芳瀧画
武州高麗郡大谷澤村に
力（ちから）も人に壮男（ますらを）の名は大河内
清兵衛とて。 釖術（けんじつ）さへも
よはからず。すぐれて強（つよ）き気性にて。 或（あ）る時（とき）近村
よりの戻（もど）りしが。何かあやしき家内（うち）の様子。よく〳〵
聞（き）けは盗賊（どろぼう）ゆへ。 隣家（きんじよ）の木太刀借り来（きた）り。声も
ろともにかけつけつ。千変万化 手負（ておひ）ながらも
ついに賊（ぞく）をは捕縛（いけどり）ば同国（どうこく）入間郡越生村
田嶋惣兵衛といへる者にてありしとぞ
木だちから火花ちらせば土（ど）ろぼうの
金だせ〳〵も水になりけり

明治八年
錦画新聞 笹木芳瀧 画
武州（武蔵国）高麗郡大谷沢村に、力もまた人にすぐれた益荒男（ますらお）がいた。名は大河内清兵衛といい、剣術の腕も弱くはなく、とりわけ強い気性の持ち主であった。
ある時、近くの村からの帰り道、どうも自分の家の様子があやしい。よくよく耳をすませてみると盗賊が入っているというので、隣家から木太刀を借りてきて、声もろとも斬り込んだ。千変万化の激しい立ち回りとなり、みずからも手傷を負いながら、ついにその賊を生け捕りにした。捕らえてみれば、同じ武蔵国入間郡越生村の田嶋惣兵衛という者であったという。
木太刀から火花を散らせば、泥棒の
「金出せ、金出せ」も水になりけり（水の泡となってしまった）

In the village of Ōyazawa, Koma District, Bushū (Musashi Province), there lived a stalwart man whose strength surpassed that of ordinary men. His name was Ōkōchi Seibei; he was no weakling at swordsmanship either, and was of an exceptionally bold and forceful temperament.
One day, as he was returning from a neighboring village, something about the state of his house seemed suspicious. Listening carefully, he realized that robbers had broken in; so he borrowed a wooden sword from the house next door and, with a great shout, rushed in upon them. After a furious, ever-shifting struggle in which he himself was wounded, he at last took the thief alive. When the man was seized, he proved to be one Tajima Sōbei of Ogose village, Iruma District, in the same province.
When sparks fly from the wooden sword,
the robber's cry of "Hand over the gold! Hand over the gold!"
comes to nothing — dissolves into water.
