Rodayū
The "Hara-hara Medicine" of Tenma in Osaka has long been famous. The master of the original house that sold it is now known as Rodayū, and has become a leading figure (a "big head") of the jōruri world. His wife, a beauty of twenty-two or three, had earned the nickname "Kyō-ningyō" (Kyoto Doll); but at some point she began an affair with a freeloader who had been idling about the house.
Rodayū ("Ro-in") got wind of it. Having secretly ordered it beforehand — no one knows when — he one day brought out an enormous *noshi* wrapping-paper, big enough to cover a whole tatami mat, tied it just as it was onto his wife's back, then summoned the sponger and said: "I make you a present of this Kyoto Doll to be your plaything, so take her wherever you like!" — and with that he drove the pair of them out of the house together.
Now is that not a delightfully thrilling ("hara-hara") dose of Hara-hara Medicine? — The story was even reported in the *Tōkyō Nichinichi Shimbun*.
All the world must have heard this tale passed from mouth to mouth —
what a clean, splendid dose of Hara-hara Medicine!
