Illustrated Miscellany, No. 38 The "Hara-hara Medicine" of Tenma in Osaka has long been famous. Its former proprietor now goes by the name Rodayū and has become a great figure (a "big head") in the world of jōruri chanting. His wife was a beauty of twenty-two or twenty-three, so lovely that she had earned the nickname "Kyoto Doll." At some point, however, she began carrying on a secret affair with a freeloader who had been idling about in the house. Rodayū got wind of it, and — who knows when he had ordered the thing made — one day he had brought in an enormous *noshi* (gift-wrapping ornament) the size of a full tatami mat, and tied it, just as it was, onto his wife's back. Then he summoned the said freeloader and said: "I'm giving you this Kyoto Doll for your plaything, so take her wherever you please." And with that he drove the pair of them out of his house together. Well now — is that not a most delightful dose of "Hara-hara Medicine"? The story even made it into the *Tōkyō Nichinichi Shimbun*. All people, too, must have heard this tale passed along — What a splendid, clean sweep of "Hara-hara Medicine"! [Note: Hara-hara Medicine is a stomach-and-bowel remedy.]
