In Noge-chō 4-chōme, Yokohama, a cat kept by the hairdresser Suzuki Fujimatsu gave birth to three kittens and then died. Fujimatsu had long been fond of animals and also kept a female Western dog, which likewise whelped around the fifth month of Meiji 8 (1875). But since there were people who wanted the puppies, he gave them away early, and so the mother dog's milk kept flowing and would not stop. He therefore set the orphaned kittens to her teats, and the dog tended and nursed them day and night without the least neglect. Everyone in the household — and even the customers at the shop — marvelled at it; indeed, if anyone came near, the Western dog would bark furiously, as though afraid her kittens would be taken from her.
Truly this is the bond of "all within the four seas are brothers." For nobles and government officials to look down upon commoners — can they be said to be even the equal of a dog?
