崔（さい）南といふ人の妻唐 婦人（ふじん）は其 姑（しうとめ）長村夫人は年老て
食事かなはざれば常に乳（ちゝ）をあたへて孝を尽（つく）せしは
世の人よく知るところなり是はそれには引かへて
東京北神保町七番地に嶌田政七と云人
の妻おつるは千年の齢（よはひ）もまたず明治
七年の頃 産（うみ）し女の子を忘れ匡（かたみ）に死したりしか

崔（さい）山南という人の妻・唐夫人は、その姑である長孫夫人が年老いて食事がとれなくなったので、常に自分の乳を飲ませて孝行を尽くしたということは、世間の人がよく知っているところである。
さて、これとは逆の話がある。東京・北神保町七番地に住む嶌田政七という人の妻おつるは、鶴の千年の齢を保つこともできず、明治七年ごろに産んだ女の子を忘れ形見として残して死んでしまった。この家の老母（おばあさん）は悲しみに堪えられず、孫を自分の手で育てることにして、七十余歳の皺（しわ）だらけの乳房を孫に含ませていたところ、不思議なことに、このごろ乳が出てほとばしり、孫はその乳を飲んで丸々と太ったという。なんとまあ、珍しいことではありませんか。

Osaka Nishiki-e Shinwa (New Tales in Osaka Brocade Pictures), No. 10 [written horizontally]
It is well known to all the world that Lady Tang, wife of a man named Cui Shannan, when her mother-in-law Lady Zhangsun grew too old to take solid food, constantly gave her own breast milk to her, fulfilling her filial duty to the utmost.
Here now is a story that is the very reverse of that. Otsuru, wife of a man named Shimada Masashichi of No. 7 Kita-Jinbōchō, Tokyo, did not live out the crane's thousand years: around the seventh year of Meiji (1874) she died, leaving behind as her keepsake a baby girl to whom she had given birth. The old grandmother of the house, unable to bear her grief, resolved to raise the grandchild with her own hands, and gave the infant her withered, wrinkled breasts of some seventy years to suck — whereupon, wondrous to relate, milk of late came forth and flowed freely, and the grandchild has grown plump upon it. Now, is that not a rare thing indeed!
