民（たミ）に親愛（しんあい）を教（おしゆ）る孝より
善は莫（なし）と．尓（さ）れば氷（ひよう）上に
鯉（り）魚を獲（ゑ）．雪中に笋（たかんな）を
抜（ぬ）く．古（ふる）き教（おしへ）を固（よく）守て．
老母が長（なが）き病（いたつき）に
食料（しよくりやう）湯薬（たうやく）二便（にべん）
の看護（かんご）．聊（すこし）も他人の
手を借（から）ず至（いた）れり
尽（つく）せる其（そが）うえに．快（くわい）
晴（せい）の日は背負（せお）ふて遊歩（いうほ）し．
母の喜（よろこ）ぶ体（さま）を見て．吾（わ）が
第一の歓楽（くわんらく）とす而（しか）して多年（たねん）
も一日の如し．未（ま）だ秋 浅（あさ）き
季候（ころ）なるも氷を食（しよく）せんこと
を望（のぞ）めば．数里（すうり）を阻（へだ）たるに
長沼（ながぬま）山の．渓間（たにそこ）深（ふか）く下（おり）たちて
僅（わつか）に氷を索得（もとめゑ）つ．母に與（あた）へし孝子は
之（こ）れ．福島 県下（けんか）岩代（いわしろ）の国 岩瀬郡（いわせごほり）．
鏡沼村（かゝみぬまむら）の農民（ひやくしやう）にて．褒金（ほうきん）若干（そこばく）

「民に親愛（したしみいつくしむ心）を教えるには、孝より善いものはない」という。それゆえ、氷の上に臥して鯉を得（王祥の故事）、雪の中から筍を掘り出す（孟宗の故事）という古い教えをよく守って、老母の長患いに際しては、食事も煎じ薬も、大小便の世話も、少しも他人の手を借りることなく、行き届いた看病を尽くした。そのうえ、よく晴れた日には母を背負って散歩に出かけ、母の喜ぶ様子を見ることを自分の第一の楽しみとした。しかもそれが長年にわたって、まるで一日のことのように変わらなかった。
まだ秋も浅い時候であったのに、母が氷を食べたいと望んだので、数里も離れた長沼山の谷底深くまで下りて行き、ようやくのことで氷を探し当て、母に与えたのである。この孝行者は、福島県下、岩代国岩瀬郡鏡沼村の農民で、褒賞金いくばくかを下賜された。

It is said that "for teaching the people love and affection, nothing is better than filial piety." Thus, faithfully keeping to the old teachings — of the man who lay upon the ice and obtained a carp, and of the man who dug bamboo shoots out of the snow — this man, during his aged mother's long illness, attended to her meals, her decoctions of medicine, and to both her bodily necessities, without borrowing another's hand in the slightest; his care was utterly thorough. Moreover, on fine, clear days he would carry her on his back for a stroll, and to see his mother's delight was his own greatest joy. And so it went, year after year, as though it were all a single day.
Once, though the autumn was still young, his mother expressed a wish to eat ice. He therefore went several ri away to Naganuma Mountain, descended deep into the bottom of a ravine, and at last managed to find some ice, which he gave to his mother. This filial son is a farmer of Kagaminuma village, Iwase district, Iwashiro province, in Fukushima prefecture, and he has been granted a sum of money in commendation.
