能辨（のうべん）を以て 安禄山等との 議論（ぎろん） 妙（めう）なるべし

芝新堀の芝居小屋・河原崎座において、「吉備大臣支那物語」と題した新作の狂言（芝居）を仕組んで上演することになった。わが国の吉備大臣が、日本と唐との間のしかじかの一件について、唐の玄宗皇帝に談判を迫り、貢ぎの金を差し出させる――という場面である。この場を演じる、その大臣に扮するのが名高い市川團十郎だと聞けば、さまざまな弁舌をふるっての安禄山らとの議論はさぞ見事なものであろう。作者は有名な河竹翁（河竹黙阿弥）であるから、きっと面白い趣向があるにちがいない、と評判である。

At the Kawarasaki-za theatre in Shiba Shinbori, a new play entitled "Kibi Daijin: A Tale of China" has been put together for performance. In it, our country's Minister Kibi, over a certain matter arising between Japan and Tang China, presses the Tang Emperor Xuanzong and compels him to hand over tribute gold. Hearing that the part of the Minister in this scene is to be taken by the celebrated Ichikawa Danjūrō, one imagines that his eloquent debate with An Lushan and the others will be splendid indeed. And since the author is the famous old master Kawatake (Mokuami), people say there will surely be something of great interest in it.
